I've been playing guitar and bass since 1969. I started playing in local clubs in 1971. I've played many different styles of music. Some of the bands I've worked with over the years are The Heat Waves, The New South, The Bush River Band, Turners Outlaw Band, Quick Change and Detour. I'm working with Kenny Lauer and The Country Breeze (Country), Over The Edge (Classic Rock and Country) and an Elvis Presley tribute artist named Lionel Ward and the New World Band. I've been working with Lionel for almost a year and I'm really enjoying it. I started playing a lot of Elvis in the early 70's with Ronnie Sines and the Heat Waves and with Oden Cullember and the Crystalaires, the "Good Old Days". Influences Since I've played so many different types of music my influences are very diverse. I've probably been influenced by every guitarist and bassist I've ever listened to to some degree, but some of my primary guitar influences have been: Stevie Ray Vaughan Buddy Guy BB King Billy Gibbons Jimi Hendrix Johnny Winter John Fogerty Charlie Christian Don Rich Roy Nichols Brent Mason My bass influences: Mel Schacher (Grand Funk Railroad) Randy Jo Hobbs(The McCoys, Johhny Winter, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer) Stuart Hamm |

Gear Used for Electric Guitar Gigs I have two guitars that are versatile enough to be used for any gig and these are the two I bring most of the time. My 2007 Tom Anderson Drop Top Classic and my 2012 Tom Anderson Classic. The Tom Anderson Drop Top Classic is a three pickup guitar and has Anderson "M" pickups on it. These are mini-humbuckers but it also has a unique and useful feature called "Kick Back". When the kick back feature is engaged it makes them sound like really fat single coils but they're still hum cancelling. It also has a push/pull switch on the tone control that adds the bridge pickup to the switch positions 4 and 5 when the bridge pickup isn't normally active. This allows it to get the bridge and neck pickup combination that a Stratocaster can't get without modification. The Tom Anderson Classic is a three pickup guitar and has an Anderson H1- humbucker in the neck position, an Anderson SF1 noiseless single coil in the middle position and an Anderson H2 humbucker in the bridge position. The humbuckers can be split using a separate switch to give a good single coil sound. It also has a push/pull switch on the tone control that adds the bridge pickup to the switch positions 4 and 5 when the bridge pickup isn't normally active. This allows it to get the bridge and neck pickup combination that a Stratocaster can't get without modification. For amps I try to bring the right size for the gig. This will usually be one of two amps, a Rivera Venus 3 or an Allen Accomplice. The Rivera Venus 3 is a 15 watt (or 7 with the 1/2 power switch engaged) 1X12 combo with a Celestion G12H30 Anniversary speaker. It's single channel with reverb, a mid notch switch and a boost switch. The tube compliment is 2-6V6 for the power amp and 2-12AX7 in the preamp. Great cleans and great crunch, cleans up well with the volume of the guitar. The 2011 Allen Accomplice 1X12 combo is 40 watts or 22 watts depending on the power tubes being used. It's a single channel with reverb, a Raw control (this control adds mids and gain as you turn it up), has a tone control for the reverb and a bright switch. Tube compliment is either 2-6L6 (40 watts) or 2-6V6 (22 watts) for the power amp and 4-12AX7 in the preamp and a GZ34 rectifier tube. Super good cleans and with the raw control can get very crunchy also. I bought this in kit form from David Allen and assembled it a couple years ago, the kit was great, the instructions were awesome and David Allen was really great with customer support. When I'm ready to build another amp, I won't hesitate to buy another kit from him. I changed the speaker to an Eminence Cannibis Rex. With either amp I can add a 1X12 extension speaker. This is an Avatar cabinet with a WGS G12C speaker, compliments both amps very well. |
Gear Used for Bass Gigs I don't play many gigs that require a huge bass rig so my MarkBass CMD151P Jeff Berlin combo has been able to cover pretty much anything I've needed to do. It's 300W at 8 ohm and 500W at 4 ohms. Solid state power and preamp, direct out and will accept either low or high impedance input. I have a New York 151 extension cabinet that can be added if more volume is needed. I've been using my Paul Reed Smith Gary Grainger 5 String for everything, it's very versatile and responds well to different right hand positions to alter the tone. If needed I also have a Fender Jazz Bass Special with active pickups and a Pedulla Thunderbolt 5 String. |
Gear Used for Acoustic Gigs I'll bring my Anderson Crowdster and my Martin Performing Artist OMCPA4 for these. The Crowdster is a very acoustic sounding thin bodied acoustic/electric. The OMCPA4 has Fishman F1 Analog electronics. I have a Fender Acoustasonic 150 2X8 for amplification which works very well. It also has some models of electric amps so it could be used for a gig where both electric and acoustic are needed. I'd have to try it in a rehearsal before I'd take it out and gig it that way. |
Effects Currently my pedalboard includes a Peterson StroboStomp Classic Tuner, Barber Compact Tone Press Compressor, 2 MXR Carbon Copy Delays, Barber Dual Discrete (this is a Barber Super Sport and a Barber Direct Drive Low Gain in one pedal and allows them to be stacked) and the Xotic RC Boost. I'm a big fan of Barber pedals. His Tone Press compressor has a blend control on it that allows you to blend in the original uneffected signal of your guitar with the compressed signal, so you can control how much squish you add to your sound. The Direct Drives are Marshalls in a pedal and sound great, low compression and great note separation. |
Other Stuff There has been debate for years about if musicians should use music stands on stage and I'll admit it looks much more professional and the musicians are much better able to work with the crowd, in my opinion anyway, if they don't used them. In the last 10 years or so I find it more difficult to remember words, not chord progressions or guitar parts, just words. So the way I look at it I had three choices: 1. Stop singing (some people may think I should have chosen this one :-) ) 2. Mumble or sing the wrong words for words I can't remember (less professional than using a music stand I think) 3. Use a music stand with a song book I started using the music stand and song book but I thought it still looked unprofessional. I saw a guy on YouTube using his iPad on his mic stand and I figured he was using it for words as he kept looking down at it while he was singing, so I started looking for something good and reasonably priced to use with my iPad. What I found was software called OnSong. This is an amazing piece of software for the money. It has almost everything I need, here's some of what it does: . Simple song and chord entry . Pull and change song lists fast . Flip through your set chord sheets . Transpose key with the brush of a finger . Will automatically show you the correct chords to play for different capo positions . Highlight font colors . Change font size and style . Save multiple song sets . Import songs from your online sources . Play music from your iPod library . Play a click track to a metronome . Share wirelessly with your band members over Bluetooth . Send your list via email to preview and print . Works with many foot pedals for page turning . Teleprompter like scrolling of words and chords . Will display your words/chords with a black background and white text, great for dark stages . Project lyrics or use a stage monitor with VGA/HDMI video out support . Import, export and synchronize with Dropbox and MobileMe iDisk and others . Edit songs on your iPad from your laptop . Highlight words in the lyrics I'm not affiliated with the publisher of this software at all but it'is just so great I wanted to share. |
